08/05/2010 - Houston, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Houston Astros agreed to terms with infielder/outfielder Delino DeShields Jr., the club's 2010 first-round draft pick, on Thursday.
Financial details were not announced.
"Delino fits perfectly into what we're trying to do at the development level," said Astros general manager Ed Wade. "He is strong, athletic and dynamic. He's got great bloodlines and is focused on being a successful big leaguer. Adding him to our mix gives us another outstanding prospect whose journey should be capped off with a solid major league career."
The 17-year-old DeShields is the son of former big leaguer, Delino Shields Sr., who hit .268 over a 13-year major league career.
DeShields Jr. was taken with the eighth overall selection in this year's MLB First Year Player Draft out of Woodward Academy in College Park, Georgia, where he was a two-sport star and was a top high school running back in the state.
He batted .415 with nine homers, 40 RBI and 29 stolen bases this year. DeShields will report the Astros' Gulf Coast League team in Kissimmee, Florida on Friday before being assigned to Greenville, the club's rookie league affiliate in the Appalachian League.
